Blackmagic Pixes 6K Camera: A Game Changer Unveiled at NAB 2024

Blackmagic Pixes 6K Camera: A Game Changer Unveiled at NAB 2024

This year at NAB 2024, I had the opportunity to take a closer look at the brand new Blackmagic Pixes 6K camera, and I have to say, it's impressive. This is the camera the entire filmmaking community has been eagerly anticipating—asking for and even begging for—and it's finally here. The fact that it's full-frame and allows for open gate filming is nothing short of amazing.

Some people have voiced concerns about the camera lacking a tilt-out screen and a V-mount battery option. However, considering that the Pixes 6K is priced under $3,000, I believe these are acceptable compromises. You can't have it all at this price point, and third-party companies are likely to address the V-mount compatibility soon enough.

Personally, I don't mind the absence of a tilt-out screen. I appreciate having a large screen on the side for menu navigation, and the touchscreen system is intuitive and user-friendly. I'm accustomed to attaching my own monitor to the Pocket series or even the URSA Mini Pro 12K, navigating through the buttons and menu on the side of the camera. So, for me, it's not a significant drawback. Perhaps Blackmagic Design will release a pro version in the future with additional features like a tilt screen, as they've done with other camera lines.

Insights from Blackmagic Employees

While at the Blackmagic booth, I spoke with several employees, particularly those familiar with the Blackmagic Video Assist system. They mentioned that all the current Video Assist monitors have been reduced in price, which often signals that a new generation is on the horizon. Indeed, they confirmed that a next-generation Blackmagic Video Assist monitor is coming. It's designed to use a single USB-C cable with locking pins for both video transmission and camera control, much like the new EVF that connects via the USB-C port.

I'm thrilled about this development. Having the ability to control the camera with the Video Assist monitor, which will feature a higher brightness display and built-in scopes, will significantly enhance the shooting experience. I provided feedback to the team, expressing a desire for dual recording capabilities on both the Video Assist and the camera itself. Given that everything connects seamlessly through one cable, this feature would be incredibly beneficial, and I hope they consider it.

The Pixes 6K: A Versatile Powerhouse

Returning to the Pixes 6K, I believe this camera is going to be a huge success. In its price range, there aren't many manufacturers offering a camera like this. The box-style design and modularity allow users to rig it up according to their preferences, which is precisely what many filmmakers are looking for today. This flexibility will help alleviate some of the negative perceptions that have historically surrounded Blackmagic rigs being cumbersome or "janky."

The modular design of the Pixes 6K allows for customized rigging.

In my professional work, I use Blackmagic cameras daily on green screen stages. While the rigging might not always be ideal, the Pocket Cinema Camera line offers unmatched quality for its price. The ability to record 12-bit RAW in high resolutions provides exceptionally clean edges on green screen plates and contributes to more realistic-looking images in virtual production environments.

The Pixes 6K brings together all these advantages in a full-frame, 6K resolution, 12-bit RAW recording, box-style camera that can be customized to suit any shooting scenario. I'm particularly excited to pair it with my Lumix camera to expand my creative possibilities.

Looking Ahead

Overall, my first day at NAB 2024 was fantastic. The Blackmagic booth was a highlight, showcasing not only the Pixes 6K but also teasing the upcoming DaVinci Resolve 19, which I can't wait to try out. The enthusiasm among fellow attendees was palpable, and it's clear that the Pixes 6K is poised to make a significant impact on the market.

Stay tuned for more updates as I explore other exciting products and innovations here at NAB. Tomorrow promises to bring even more discoveries, and I look forward to sharing them with you.
