Hands-On with the Z CAM E2-F6 Pro at NAB 2024

Hands-On with the Z CAM E2-F6 Pro at NAB 2024

At NAB 2024, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Kinson and the team at Z CAM, a brand I've been a big fan of for years. The spotlight was on the E2-F6 Pro, a camera that was initially released two years ago but faced some production hurdles that delayed its widespread availability.

Unveiling the Production Delays

In a candid conversation with Robert, a representative from Z CAM, I learned that the company encountered challenges ramping up production for the E2-F6 Pro. The process wasn't as smooth as anticipated, which explains why Z CAM appeared somewhat silent since the camera's initial announcement. Understanding these hurdles sheds light on why this impressive camera hasn't been as widely discussed as it deserves.

Despite the setbacks, the E2-F6 Pro is a remarkable piece of equipment. Now that production issues have been ironed out, it's exciting to see the camera finally making its way into the hands of filmmakers.

Key Updates and Enhancements

One of the significant updates to the E2-F6 Pro is the improved connection to the monitor. The camera now features a locking pin mechanism, ensuring a rock-solid connection that minimizes the risk of breakage—a noteworthy enhancement over previous designs.

The new locking pin ensures a secure connection to the monitor.

The build quality remains top-notch, with the camera boasting a full-metal construction (excluding the touchscreen monitor). The design has evolved from the original E2 flagship series to a more professional form factor, featuring a locking door that accommodates storage media more securely.

Versatile Storage Options

The E2-F6 Pro introduces a redesigned storage system. Users can now lock and load a magazine-style compartment that holds CFast cards. For those seeking faster speeds, Z CAM offers the ZRAW Recorder (ZBRA)—a super-fast, high-speed SSD with a built-in reader, providing flexibility depending on your recording needs.

Enhanced Connectivity and Power

Significant upgrades include the addition of 12G-SDI Genlock and a shift from the original NP-F battery to a mini V-mount battery system. These changes not only enhance the camera's functionality but also align it with professional industry standards, catering to filmmakers who require robust and reliable equipment.

Addressing Latency Concerns

Latency issues, particularly with HDMI output, have been a topic of discussion with the original E2 series. I'm pleased to report that with the E2-F6 Pro, latency has been significantly reduced—practically eliminated—whether you're using SDI or HDMI. This improvement puts the E2-F6 Pro on par with, if not ahead of, the competition in terms of real-time monitoring.

User Interface and Controls

The camera now features additional function buttons, with numbers 7, 8, and 9 added on the right side, and more buttons on the monitor itself—up to 13 customizable buttons in total. This expansion allows for greater customization and quicker access to essential settings, enhancing the overall user experience.

New function buttons provide quick access to camera settings.

The menu system remains intuitive and familiar to users of the original E2 series, ensuring a smooth transition for those upgrading to the Pro model.

Final Thoughts

While the E2-F6 Pro is slightly larger than the original E2-F6, the added functionalities and features make it a versatile workhorse without being unwieldy. For someone like me, who is accustomed to larger rigs like the URSA 12K, the E2-F6 Pro offers a perfect balance of size and capability.

It's exciting to see Z CAM back in full force and actively shipping the E2-F6 Pro. I can't wait to get my hands on this camera and put it through its paces.

It was fantastic catching up with the Z CAM team at NAB 2024. Stay tuned for more insights and hands-on experiences as I continue to explore the latest innovations showcased at the event.
